State system of school education
Public school education in Cyprus is compulsory and free of charge for all children between the ages of 5 and 15 who have a residence permit in Cyprus. State education lasts 12 years. Children enter school at the age of 6 and graduate at the age of 18. Primary education is compulsory for all children over the age of 5.5. Secondary education in Cyprus is divided into two three-year cycles. The first is incomplete secondary education, or "gymnasium", for students aged 12-15, and the second is upper secondary education, or "lyceum", for students aged 15-18.
