Public schools are free and provide a good educational base, including foreign languages, especially English.



State system of school education


Public school education in Cyprus is compulsory and free of charge for all children between the ages of 5 and 15 who have a residence permit in Cyprus. State education lasts 12 years. Children enter school at the age of 6 and graduate at the age of 18. Primary education is compulsory for all children over the age of 5.5. Secondary education in Cyprus is divided into two three-year cycles. The first is incomplete secondary education, or "gymnasium", for students aged 12-15, and the second is upper secondary education, or "lyceum", for students aged 15-18. To obtain a secondary education, students can choose to attend a secondary technical and vocational school, which offers a more specialized curriculum.

How to choose a school?


Education in public schools is determined by place of residence.


List of documents


When entering the school, the following documents must be submitted:

  • birth certificate/passport

  • certificate of residence

  • the child's medical card with vaccination information, which will indicate the child's vaccination status.


Features of private schools


Cyprus offers excellent opportunities for quality education under the UK national school curriculum. In all major cities of Cyprus (Nicosia, Limassol, Larnaca and Paphos) there are English schools providing a full cycle of primary and secondary education. Most English language schools in Limassol.


A total of 39 private secondary schools are registered, 15 of which are located in Limassol. Here are probably the most famous English language schools:

Education in English schools lasts 13 years. Children enter school from the age of 5. Primary education lasts 6 years, secondary education lasts another 7 years. Teenagers finish school at the age of 18. As a result of 5 years of study in secondary school, students pass exams and receive a General Certificate of Secondary Education - GCSE. The last two years of high school are intended for preparation for entering a university. After leaving school, students take the A-levels. Exam results are accepted by British universities.
